Puerto Rico generates 10,000 tons of waste daily, of which less than 15 percent is recycled. In partnership with the town of Guaynabo and the Environmental Awareness Foundation, Hugo Neu Environmental created the “Earth Recycling Challenge,” a contest where nine schools recovered 110 tons of recyclable materials.

“This contest was an educational vehicle to generate enthusiasm for recycling in participating schools and the homes and communities of these students,” said Greg Cortés, head of Hugo Neu in Puerto Rico.

For this project, all kinds of promotional and educational materials were designed, including posters, flyers, banners, illustrations, stickers, and T-shirts.

The 110 tons of recycled material are the equivalent of 220,140 pounds that were not sent to a landfill. Considering a population of 6,000 participating students, the total recycled was the equivalent of 36.69 pounds per person.
